take a motor industry insider to tell us SUVs are the dominant vehicle style in
today's market, so the launch of a new flagship SUV is inevitably a big deal
for Citroen. But when it finally arrives the new Citroën C5 Aircross will be much more than just another SUV in
the market, so here's what to expect when it finally lands with us here at Sportif
Citroën towards the end of this year.
What Exactly is the C5 Aircross?
Yes, the C5
Aircross is a new SUV for the lineup
of Citroën SUVs here in the UK. But
as well as becoming the flagship SUV in the Citroen portfolio, the C5
Aircross will also include a number of elements that are rare in the
current market, especially at this level. As well as being an outstanding SUV
in its own right, the new model will also be available as a plug-in hybrid, and
it will also feature elements of semi-autonomous driving technology.
How an SUV
looks on the road or when it's parked outside a home is as important for many
buyers as how it drives and handles. And the good news for anyone who saw the
2015 concept and liked it will welcome that the production model is coming to
market largely guarded from that stunning concept form. Inevitably, things have
been toned down a little, but the floating roof with 360-degree windows that's
been capped off with the new chrome C-pillar design is still there, and so are
the flared wheel arches and the Airbump-equipped body cladding that delivers a
chunky, rugged SUV look to the C5 Aircross.
some of its more tiresome rivals that make buyers pick from the usual eight or
nine exterior colours, the C5 Aircross will be available in no less than 30
exterior colour combinations and with alloys measuring from 17- to 19-inches in
The new SUV
measures 4,500 mm long, 1,840mm wide and 1,670mm tall, while the wheelbase is
2,730mm and ground clearance comes in at 230mm. It means there's plenty of leg
and headroom in the new Citroen, as well as a 580-litre boot that is expandable
to 720-litres with the rear seats folded forward and a massive 1,630-litres of
space with the rear seats folded flat.
be all the usual connectivity and comfort technology features, such as an
eight-inch touchscreen for the infotainment and a 12.3-inch customisable
digital instrument cluster. The Citroen then goes above and beyond with an
incredible 20 different driver-assistance technologies, including Active Safety
Brake, Post-collision Safety Brake, Blind Spot Monitoring System, Active Lane
Departure Warning, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go Function and many
As well as
the plug-in hybrid, there will also be two petrol and two diesel engines to
choose from in the new C5 Aircross. The petrols will be a 128 bhp
three-cylinder PureTech and a 178 bhp four-cylinder PureTech. The diesels will
be a 128 bhp BlueHDi 130 and a more powerful 180 bhp version.
